As thousands of migrants from Central America make their way to the United States, Oxfam and its local partners are supporting some 2,500 people who are left stranded at the Guatemala-Mexico border. But why are they fleeing their countries? And why are they traveling together? Here, we answer these and other questions.

Oxfam has expressed its concern for the vulnerable situation faced by the over 5,000 migrants who at this moment are walking in caravan through Central America towards the border with the United States.

The six wealthiest nations host less than nine percent of the world’s refugees while poorer countries shoulder most of the responsibility.

Despite 800 people drowning off Lampedusa in the Mediterranean on this day last year, Europe is still failing to deal effectively with the migration crisis, said Oxfam in a new report today, “EU hotspots spread fear and doubt”.

Deportations of refugees and migrants from Greece to Turkey must be halted immediately and people wanting to seek asylum should not be kept in detention, said Oxfam, Norwegian Refugee Council and Solidarity Now today in Greece. 

Oxfam and other agencies say that the international community must agree a bold new deal for Syria’s refugees if it is serious about tackling the largest humanitarian crisis since World War II. The new deal must provide more investment in Syria’s neighbours, which host more than 4 million refugees, and an end to restrictions that prevent refugees from working and in some cases living legally in these countries. 

Up to 700 people - possibly more - may have died in the latest wreck of a migrants' ship in the straits between Libya and Italy. Words and consternation are no longer enough, says international agency Oxfam.
