The EU is in danger of violating global and EU aid rules by using aid to halt migration. This is according to Oxfam’s new report, From Development to Deterrence, which sheds light on how the EU employs its aid budget to outsource migration control to countries in Africa. The report reveals that 6 out of the 16 identified migration activities in Niger, Libya and Tunisia potentially breach aid rules. These 6 activities total €667 million, with the total funds analysed amounting to approximately €1 billion. 

The 21 billionaires in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), all of them men, saw their wealth increase by nearly $10 billion since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, almost double the estimated amount required to rebuild Lebanon's shattered capital, while 45 million more people in the region could be pushed to poverty as a result of the pandemic, a new Oxfam report revealed today.

Oxfam calls for more efforts to put the protection of women and girls rights at the heart of the global gender justice agenda.

The Tunisian Parliament has adopted a new law for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls, including domestic violence. In response, Soufia Galand, Oxfam Country Office Tunisia Gender Justice Officer, said: “The revolution is still alive and it has added a feminist milestone to its path!"
