EU hotspots

People who have fled war, violence and persecution need support to find safety and rebuild their lives. However, in the EU 'hotspots' in Greece, people are faced with an asylum process which is extremely complicated to navigate.

The death of a mother in a Greek refugee camp is appalling, and a direct consequence of the EU's migration policies, says Oxfam.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras should end the Greek government’s “containment policy” of confining asylum seekers to the Aegean islands, 19 human rights and humanitarian aid organizations said in an open letter released today.

France is unlikely to be able to guarantee safety and human rights for asylum seekers in Libya, Oxfam said in reaction to French plans to set up a processing centre in Libya for asylum seekers in the North-African country.

Already more than 1,000 migrants have been reported dead or missing in 2017 while trying to cross the Mediterranean. EU leaders must expand safe and regular routes so migrants are not forced to risk their lives in search of safety and dignity, Oxfam said in response.
