In reaction to DFID's statement today announcing new aid for Ethiopia for the food crisis:
Jane Cocking, Oxfam’s Humanitarian Director said:
“Oxfam welcomes the UK government's announcement and the money cannot come soon enough. There are already critical and life threatening food shortages in Ethiopia and across the Horn of Africa region. Two successive poor rains have left millions of people struggling to get food as hundreds of thousands of livestock have died and crops have failed. Other donors now need to follow suit and increase funding before it is too late.
"Food on its own is not enough; donors also need to pledge funds to meet other basic needs, such as clean water. Oxfam is scaling up our response to reach 700,000 people in Ethiopia. The clock is ticking and the faster aid can be delivered the more lives can be saved.”
