Governments give promising signal to acknowledge shipping industry role in climate change

As the meeting of the International Maritime Organization held in London this week draws to a close Oxfam's EU Climate Change Policy Advisor Tim Gore said:

"Governments have given a promising signal this week that they're beginning to take the shipping industry's important role in tackling climate change seriously. The agreement to hold a special meeting in the Spring focused on measures which can control greenhouse gas emissions, that could raise vital funds to help communities adapt, is a ray of hope for poor people struggling to cope with climate change.

The shipping industry must play its part in raising the tens of billions needed for a new UN climate fund to ensure poor people get the resources they need, without raiding existing aid budgets."
