In response to today's announcement of Gabon's Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), Tim Gore, Oxfam's international climate adviser, made the following statement:
"Oxfam welcomes the INDC from Gabon. As the first African country to put their offer for the Paris climate talks on the table, Gabon is showing the way to rich countries - from Australia to Japan - that have yet to do so.
This seems a comprehensive plan, rooted in Gabon's national strategy for sustainable development, that shows poor country governments don't have to choose between development that is good for their people and good for the climate - the right policies, if designed with the full participation of citizens, can deliver benefits for both.
The plan makes clear that Gabon will contribute its own financial resources to these efforts, but will also require additional financing from international sources to unlock the maximum ambition. This shows why it is imperative that rich countries deliver on their existing commitments on climate finance, including to the Green Climate Fund, and prepare to make new ones in Paris for the post-2020 period."
Notes to editors
The Gabon INDC will deliver greenhouse gas emissions reductions of at least 50% below business-as-usual by 2025, encompassing actions in all major emitting sectors including forestry and land use change, flaring, energy efficiency and scale-up of renewable energy (primarily from hydropower).
