Yesterday's vote on the European Parliament’s position vis-à-vis the COP21 was welcomed by Oxfam for highlighting the importance of climate finance for developing countries.
Lies Craeynest, Climate Lead at Oxfam, said:
“This vote marks a breakthrough for climate justice. The parliament’s position supports using some of the money paid by big polluters into the EU’s emission trading system for climate adaptation and mitigation objectives in developing countries. This is only fair, as many of the poorest countries in the world are hit hardest by the effects of climate change. Finding new sources of support to supplement aid budgets is a key to ensuring that the growing costs of climate impacts do not crowd out existing development priorities."
