Oxfam is calling for more investment to go into preparing people for floods and other disasters in Pakistan as it marks its 40th year of working in the country this week.

It was a night of film stars and philanthropy at the Armani Hotel in Dubai as the Dubai International Film Festival unfurled the red carpet for ‘One Night to Change Lives’, the annual gala fundraiser in aid of UAE-based philanthropic organization, Dubai Cares, and world-wide development organization, Oxfam.

Commenting on the failure of EU Energy Ministers to reach agreement on EU biofuel policy today, Marc Olivier Herman, Oxfam’s biofuels expert said:

International agency Oxfam will start distributing 400 tons of rice seeds in six rural municipalities south of Tacloban today (Thursday 12 December) to help farmers win their 'race against time' to avoid missing the next growing season.

If Europe were to rule out its support of biofuels by 2020, the region could lower its net imports of grain and oilseeds by up to 27 million tons, remarkably reducing its dependence on foreign goods. Global food prices could also drop significantly.

In reaction to the new trade facilitation agreement approved in Bali on Saturday, Romain Benicchio, Senior Policy Advisor with Oxfam, said:

Despite widespread destruction and massive logistical obstacles in the wake of the Philippines typhoon, fast action backed by generous international support and the solidarity of local people has helped millions of people survive and prevented any major outbreak of disease.
