The Paris agreement is at risk if developed countries cannot first show that they are keeping to their existing climate finance commitments, as made at the Copenhagen climate change conference in 2009, to mobilise $100bn/year by 2020.

Responding to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) updated NDC Synthesis Report, Oxfam France’s Advocacy Manager Armelle Le Comte said: “This confirms we are still dangerously off track from limiting global warming to the vital 1.5°C limit. The climate clock is ticking ever closer to midnight and COP26 now needs to be a planetary crisis meeting. Governments need to agree to revise their climate plans more regularly to get us back on track. Remedial action is desperately needed now —there is no later or better time."

Thousands of Somali families were displaced to urban centres by the 2017 drought. Research by a group of NGOs indicates that they do not intend to return home anytime soon. It also shows how precarious and limited are the livelihood opportunities for displaced people in Somalia.

As part of its food and climate justice campaign, Oxfam commissioned researchers to examine the impact of four extreme weather events on vulnerable people, exploring when and why threats emerge.

In reaction to the announcement by Canada’s Environment Minister Peter Kent that Canada is to formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, Oxfam’s International Climate Adviser Tim Gore, said:

Oxfam welcomes today’s adoption of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) as an historic moment. Governments have finally recognized in a formal way that migrants too have fundamental human rights that countries must observe in all their policies and practices. This is a significant achievement.
