The richest 1% now have more wealth than the rest of the world combined. The fight against poverty will not be won until the inequality crisis is tackled.

Millions of poor and vulnerable people face hunger and poverty this year and next because of record global temperatures, droughts and erratic rains in 2014 and 2015, compounded by the development of possibly the most powerful El Niño on record.

Oxfam has calculated that if inequality in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region were to be reduced by five points between 2011 and 2019, some 17.4 million people could move out of poverty. If the opposite were to occur, a five-point increase could result in an additional 18 million people living in poverty.  

The richest 1% in Latin America and the Caribbean owns 41% of the region’s total wealth and if this trend continues, in only 8 years’ time the progress that has been achieved there in reducing poverty could drastically reverse, warns Oxfam today. On average, the annual income of Latin American billionaires is almost 5,000 times greater than that of the region’s poorest people.
