Governments around the world are putting women and girls in danger of unprecedented new levels of poverty, peril, overwork and premature death as a result of near-universal “slash-and-burn" efforts to recover their economies from the pandemic and tame inflation.

A new Oxfam report shows an undeniable increase in gender-based violence (GBV) during the COVID-19 pandemic around the world to which too many governments and donors are not doing enough to tackle.

 

The worldwide Enough Campaign aims to challenge and change the social acceptance and prevalence of violence against women and girls and gender-based violence by addressing the social norms that justify and perpetuate abuse and gender inequality. Covering the first three years of the campaign, this report documents and assesses progress and results.

More than a million women and girls in Burkina Faso are facing increased sexual violence, hunger and water shortage as a result of the coronavirus pandemic on top of the existing conflict, said Oxfam today.

New research from Oxfam finds that sexual harassment of women, girls and gender non-conforming people on public transport is tolerated by urban Sri Lankan commuters who consider it normal male behaviour, an everyday occurrence and the fault of women for not being submissive, obedient or dressing decently.

This collated research report is based on formative research from 12 countries across Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and the Pacific. The report identifies dominant and common patterns in the social norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls.

Oxfam has revealed in a report published today that male violence against women remains very much a part of life for young Latin Americans, who still consider it “normal.”
