The failure to recognize community land rights not only undermines the human rights of local people. It also threatens humanity’s ability to achieve food security and fight climate change.

On 25 April 2015, Nepal was struck by a massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake that left nearly 9,000 people dead and destroyed or damaged more than 850,000 homes. Many of the affected people have received some support from the Government of Nepal and aid organizations, but others are still waiting for assistance. 

The Guatemalan government is failing to deliver on its promises to relocate hundreds of Polochic families who were violently evicted from their land nearly four years ago. Representatives from the 14 affected Polochic Valley communities are today delivering a letter to the Guatemalan government demanding action. 

African governments are increasingly turning to partnerships with donors and multinational companies to stimulate investment in agriculture, after decades of neglect.

Building back better after Typhoon Haiyan requires more than houses on safe land. It requires measures to improve the security of land tenure for poor and vulnerable people.
