Afghan women are consistently excluded from Afghanistan’s peace negotiations and formal talks about the country’s future. Unless this discrimination is reversed, Afghanistan’s development will be compromised, and enormous human rights gains made since the fall of the Taliban will remain under threat.

While yesterday’s ceasefire is a sign of political progress, efforts to support the more than 50,000 South Sudanese refugees in Uganda remain grossly under resourced, and host communities are being pushed to the breaking point.

At the closing of the first day of the Geneva II Conference, in Montreux, Oxfam’s Shaheen Chughtai said:

International aid agency Oxfam is extremely concerned that the recent intensification of fighting in Mali, which includes the intervention of French military, could worsen restrictions on humanitarian access and lead to a significant increase the humanitarian needs of populations across the country and in neighboring states.

Development gains made in Afghanistan over the last decade are in danger of being thrown away if levels of aid fall away in conjunction with the withdrawal of international troops in 2014.
