Oxfam is finalizing and will soon be rolling out improved, uniform safeguarding systems and policies and new safeguarding staff across its global confederation, detailed in its second progress report published today.

This report outlines Oxfam’s proposal for a new and balanced approach to managing migration – one that protects people and promotes the benefits associated with migration for European host countries, people on the move and their countries of origin.

Worldwide, more than 65 million people have fled conflict, violence and persecution. Millions more are driven from their homes by disasters, drought and inequality. This paper tells the stories of some of those millions of people.

In reaction to the suspension of South Sudan mediation talks in Addis Ababa, Oxfam’s Acting Country Director in South Sudan, David Crawford, said:

While yesterday’s ceasefire is a sign of political progress, efforts to support the more than 50,000 South Sudanese refugees in Uganda remain grossly under resourced, and host communities are being pushed to the breaking point.

Civilians fleeing from conflict in South Sudan are spiralling into debt and leaving behind important assets in their desperate search for safety.

Responding to the growing humanitarian impact of the political crisis in South Sudan, Emma Drew, Oxfam's South Sudan Acting Country Director said from Juba:

A military offensive in northern Mali would have serious humanitarian consequences and requires serious safeguards to be put in place warns a coalition of ten non-governmental organizations today.

As the M23 armed group fights to take control of yet more territory in eastern DRC, and a multitude of other armed groups terrorize communities, there is a risk of complete collapse of state authority and worsening humanitarian crisis.
