European Union member states should urgently relocate unaccompanied children from the Greek islands to safety in their territory, 65 human rights, humanitarian and civil society organisations said in a statement today.

Up to 200,000 survivors of last November’s deadly typhoon Haiyan are at risk of worsening poverty because the government plans to relocate them without sufficient consideration as to how they will later earn a living. 

Typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda) left four million people homeless.

Leadership from the new Haitian government is urgently needed to relocate the 630,000 people who are still living under tents and tarpaulins.

The Haitian government must ensure new camps are ready to receive earthquake survivors before more evacuations take place. Agencies are rushing to prepare a new site in time for people who must be relocated due to the high risk of mudslides.
