Oxfam and other NGOs condemn the attack on the children's hospital in Kyiv.

In reaction to Russia’s attack on Kharkiv today which severely damaged a community centre operated by Oxfam’s partner “Peaceful Heaven of Kharkiv”, Nicola Bay, Oxfam’s Organisational Lead for Ukraine, said: 

More than two years on from the escalation of the war in Ukraine, women and girls’ humanitarian needs remain unmet. The gendered impacts of the war are being overlooked, pre-existing gender-based inequalities are being exacerbated and Women’s Rights and Women-Led Organizations (WROs/WLOs) are being largely excluded from the humanitarian coordination, decision making and funding systems in Ukraine. 

In reaction to today’s Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, and Vinnytsia regions, which have left thousands of people without electricity or water, and caused disruptions to transport and communications, Sarah Redd – Oxfam’s Advocacy Campaigns and Engagement Manager for the Ukraine Response - said: 

Two years since the escalation of the war in Ukraine, more than 10,500 civilians have been killed, including 587 children, as constant bombardments, mines, and drone attacks have left a generation traumatized, displaced, and fearful for their lives, said Oxfam together with 50 other humanitarian agencies, today.  

Responding to the recent wave of attacks in Ukraine which killed at least 52 people, Nicola Bay, Oxfam’s Organizational Lead in Ukraine said: "The attacks, which were near the operations being run by Oxfam and its partner organizations, will mean reaching those people already impacted by this war will be even more challenging."  

In response to the EU’s decision to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for refugees fleeing Ukraine, Nicola Bay, Lead of Oxfam’s Ukraine response, said:

Oxfam welcomes today’s Open Debate on the UN’s 2023 Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict, which highlights the urgent need for all parties involved in armed conflicts to respect their international obligations and to prioritize the protection of children. 

Responding to the attack that took place in Kramatorsk on the evening of Thursday 27 June which resulted in the killing of at least 11 people, including three children, and a continuing search for survivors, Nicola Bay, Organizational Lead for Oxfam’s Ukraine response said: “Oxfam strongly condemns this attack. Innocent civilians, including children, should not pay the price for this war."
