UN climate summit

Reaction to the announcement that the UN Climate Summit, due to take place in the UK in November 2020, has been postponed as a result of the Coronavirus.

 

 

 

Responding to the final communiqué of the COP25 climate talks in Madrid, Chema Vera, Interim Executive Director of Oxfam International, said: “The world is screaming out for climate action but this summit has responded with a whisper. The poorest nations are in a sprint for survival yet many governments have barely moved from the starting blocks."

The contentious issue of financial support for communities, including displaced communities, which have suffered loss and damage as a result of the climate crisis is expected to take center stage at the UN Climate Summit in Madrid from 2 – 13 December 2019.

"Leaders took to the world stage with words of inspiration but delegates have got little more to bring the world closer to a strong climate deal, said Oxfam’s climate change lead, Kelly Dent, in response to leaders’ speeches for action on the opening day of the Paris climate talks.

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso gave a speech at the UN Climate Summit today, claiming the EU is setting a good example in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 

The poorest people who need the most help to adapt to a changing climate are largely being bypassed by the small amount of climate funds now being disbursed, says a new Oxfam report published today at the UN climate change talks in Tianjin, China.
