In response to the UN's review of funds needed for Syria and the regional refugee crisis today, Andy Baker, who leads Oxfam's response to the crisis in Syrian and Iraq, said:

As rains cut off humanitarian access and increase risk of the spread of disease, increased donor funding is critical to saving lives in South Sudan

On Thursday 15 May the Ministry of Health announced 18 confirmed cases of cholera in various locations across Juba. The source of the disease is not yet known.

The safety of seven million people in South Sudan is rapidly deteriorating. Oxfam says the Government of South Sudan and parties to the conflict must immediately agree to a ceasefire. The international community needs to step up efforts to help stop the conflict and saves lives with a massive injection of emergency aid.

In reaction to the suspension of South Sudan mediation talks in Addis Ababa, Oxfam’s Acting Country Director in South Sudan, David Crawford, said:

On Friday (Mar 28), the Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos, will address the UN Security Council on Syria.

Violence in Central African Republic has seen many large traders and herders targeted and chased from the country, raising fears of a market collapse  that would exacerbate the current food crisis.

Responding to the growing humanitarian impact of the political crisis in South Sudan, Emma Drew, Oxfam's South Sudan Acting Country Director said from Juba:

The UN announced that up to 100,000 have died as a result of the Syria crisis.
