We are sad to announce that, as of 30 September 2018, Oxfam Japan has shut down its operations, dissolved Oxfam Japan as a corporate entity, and withdrawn from the Oxfam Confederation.
Oxfam Japan was established as a non-profit corporation in 2003 and formally became an affiliate of Oxfam International in 2012. During this time, Oxfam Japan has successfully lobbied the Japanese government and international institutions to act on issues such as economic inequality and gender justice; established a vibrant network of young people committed to social justice; and participated in the humanitarian response following serious earthquakes in Japan.
Unfortunately, the organisation has not been able to reach the point where it was financially sustainable, and in March 2018 Oxfam Japan’s Board of Trustees took the difficult decision to close.
Since this time, Oxfam International has been working closely with Oxfam Japan to ensure that staff are supported and the vital work that the organisation has undertaken in Japan and beyond is taken forward by others.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Oxfam Japan’s staff, board, supporters, donors, and partners, for joining us in the fight against poverty and inequality and wish them well as they continue their work for a just world free from poverty.
