Economic inequality in Brazil has reached extreme levels, despite being one of largest economies in the world. Last decades have seen incredible progress across Brazil. The country has been able to reduce inequalities taking millions of people out of poverty and thereby raising the base of the social pyramid. But despite the evolution, the pace has been very slow and the Latin American giant is still on the list of the most unequal countries on the planet.
The current Brazilian context, marked by a severe economic and political crisis, also reveals that the achievements in this field are fragile and under threat. That is why it is urgent to address some of the structural causes of inequalities in Brazil, with special emphasis on the unfair tax system, insufficient investments in social policies, educational deficit, discrimination against black people and women, and the democratic inability to have governments working for everyone, not just the few.
The construction of a more equal and fair country depends on progress in all these fields.
