After a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Lushan County in Sichuan this morning, leaving more than 156 people dead and 5,500 people injured (as of 8 p.m. Beijing Time), four Oxfam staff from our Chengdu office set off to the affected area at noon today and are estimated to arrive at the worst-hit Lushan County tonight for immediate assessment.
Oxfam Hong Kong is transferring emergency supplies from the emergency warehouse in Chengdu to the affected people in Lushan County. They include 2,180 quilts, 57 tents, 500 sets of cooking utensils and 500 sanitary kits.
Field workers from our Kunming Office are also ready to deliver emergency supplies from the Kunming warehouse to the affected area to support the disaster relief work if needed.
Oxfam Hong Kong has launched a public appeal in response to the Sichuan earthquake. We aim to raise HK$1 million ($129,000).
Oxfam released the "512 Wenchuan Earthquake Five-Year-On Report of Oxfam Hong Kong" earlier to introduce the reconstruction progress after the 5.12 earthquake. Oxfam promptly responded to the emergency in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces after the earthquake happened. In the past five years, Oxfam has been working with 91 partners including government departments, local NGOs and research institutes to work on emergency relief and rehabilitation work in the affected regions. As of February 2013, Oxfam has contributed HK$166 million ($21.4 million) to 216 projects in the three provinces including 28 emergency relief projects and 188 reconstruction programs, assisting over 850,000 people.
