Oxfam reaction to Saudi-led coalition announced ceasefire in Yemen

In reaction to the announcement by the Saudi coalition of a ceasefire in Yemen, Muhsin Siddiquey, Oxfam Yemen Country Director, said : "The announcement from the Saudi-led coalition that it will be laying down arms is a welcome move that offers Yemen a chance to avert a fresh disaster.

"Over five years of war have left Yemenis with little defense against the coronavirus, as the country’s health system has been destroyed and families lack the resources like clean water, sanitation, proper nutrition they need to protect themselves.

"The impact of the coronavirus on people already pushed to the brink would be devastating. Yemenis desperately need to be able to focus on the basics of keeping their families healthy – not dodging bombs and ground fighting.

"The urgent need now is for all parties to agree to a nationwide ceasefire, and to allow full, safe humanitarian access to ensure Yemeni families have the best chance to prevent and contain the virus."

In recent days, even after initial commitments to suspend fighting in light of COVID-19, violence escalated along new and existing fronts – just this week five women were killed, and 28 others were injured when shelling targeted the women's section of the main prison west of Taiz governorate. Over 40,000 civilians have been displaced since mid-January when fighting escalated in parts of Sanaa,  Marib and Al Jawf Governorates.
